What Is a Gravity Bong and How Do You Use One

Short answer: a gravity bong uses water displacement instead of your lungs to pull smoke into a chamber, delivering a bigger, more concentrated hit. Here's exactly how it works, and how to use one properly.

If you've heard the term "gravity bong," "geeb," or "bucket bong" thrown around and wondered what it actually means, you're in the right place. It's one of the most talked-about ways to smoke, but also one of the most misunderstood by anyone who hasn't used one before. Here's the full breakdown.

What Is a Gravity Bong?

A gravity bong (sometimes shortened to "GB" or "geeb") is a smoking device that uses water displacement and air pressure to pull smoke into a chamber for you, instead of relying on your lungs to draw it through — the way a traditional bong or pipe works.

The result is a hit that's typically much larger and more concentrated than what you'd get from a hand pipe or standard water pipe, because the entire chamber fills with smoke before you inhale anything.

There are two main styles:

  • Bucket-style — a bottle or chamber is submerged in a larger container of water, then slowly lifted to draw smoke in.
  • Waterfall-style — water drains out of a container through a small hole, and the vacuum created as it drains pulls smoke in.

Both use the same core principle. The difference is just which direction the water moves.

How Does a Gravity Bong Work?

Here's the physics in plain terms: when water leaves a sealed chamber — whether you're lifting a submerged bottle out of water, or letting water drain out through a hole — it creates a vacuum. Air has to come from somewhere to fill that empty space, and the only path available is through the bowl. As that air gets pulled across the burning material, it carries smoke down into the chamber with it.

Once the chamber is full, you remove the bowl, seal your mouth over the opening, and reverse the motion — pushing the bottle back down, or covering the drain hole. That reversal pushes the built-up smoke out of the chamber and into your lungs in one continuous pull.

How to Use a Bucket-Style Gravity Bong

  1. Fill the base with water. Fill your outer container (bucket, sink, or large vessel) so the inner chamber will be mostly submerged.
  2. Lower the chamber in. Place the bottle or chamber into the water so the bowl end sits above the surface.
  3. Pack the bowl. Add ground material to the bowl at the top.
  4. Light and lift. Light the bowl while slowly lifting the chamber upward. This pulls water out and smoke in, keep the bottom submerged the whole time.
  5. Remove the bowl. Once the chamber is full, take the bowl off.
  6. Inhale. Put your mouth around the opening and slowly push the chamber back down, inhaling as the smoke is pushed out.

How to Use a Waterfall-Style Gravity Bong

  1. Cover the drain hole at the bottom of the bottle with a finger.
  2. Fill the bottle with water to near the top, keeping the drain hole covered.
  3. Pack the bowl at the top of the bottle.
  4. Light and release. Light the bowl and uncover the drain hole at the same time, letting the water rush out.
  5. Once empty, remove the bowl and seal your mouth over the opening.
  6. Inhale whatever smoke remains in the chamber.

Is a Gravity Bong Right for You?

A few honest things worth knowing before your first use:

  • Hits are significantly stronger than a standard pipe or bong hit, since the entire chamber fills before you inhale. If you're newer to smoking, start with a small amount of material and go slow — you can always take another hit, but you can't take one back.
  • It's not a discreet method. Between the setup, the equipment, and the size of the hit, this isn't built for quick or low-key sessions. If discretion matters more to you, a hand pipe or vape is a better fit.
  • Material and ventilation matter. Never use aluminum foil as your bowl (it degrades and shouldn't be inhaled). Use food-grade plastic, glass, or a proper metal or glass bowl piece instead, and make sure your setup is well-ventilated.

Premade vs. DIY Gravity Bongs

A classic DIY setup (cut plastic bottle, bucket, foil bowl) is a rite of passage for a lot of people, but it comes with real downsides — flimsy materials, degrading plastic taste, and foil that shouldn't be inhaled long-term. If you'd rather skip the at-home engineering, a purpose-built gravity bong solves all of that with proper glass or borosilicate construction and a real bowl piece.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is a gravity bong hit so much stronger? Because the entire chamber fills with smoke before you inhale, rather than pulling smoke through a small path in real time the way a standard bong or pipe works. You're inhaling a much larger, more concentrated volume in one pull.

What's the difference between a bucket bong and a waterfall bong? A bucket bong uses a chamber that's lifted out of water to create the vacuum. A waterfall bong uses a chamber that drains water out through a hole instead. Both rely on the same displacement principle, just in opposite directions.

Can you use a gravity bong indoors? Yes, but ventilation matters given the size of the hit and the smoke volume involved. A well-ventilated room is a good idea regardless of which method you use.

Do I need a special bowl for a gravity bong? A proper glass or metal bowl piece is a safer, longer-lasting option than a DIY foil bowl. Most premade gravity bongs come with a compatible bowl included, with replacements available separately.
